THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL TRADING PORT IN VIETNAM’S HISTORY

Surprisingly, the first international trading port in Vietnam’s history was Trang Vân Đồn, established by King Lý Anh Tông in 1149.

With over 600 islands of varying sizes, forming an arc embracing Bái Tử Long Bay, Vân Đồn District creates a natural fortress safeguarding the northeastern seas of the homeland. It is a place where the echoes of the historic “Vân Đồn Victory” resonate into the future, immortalized in the nation’s proud legacy of resisting foreign invaders. As one of the cradles of Hạ Long culture, Vân Đồn – “the mountain veiled in clouds” – is blessed by Mother Nature with majestic landscapes, abundant precious seafood, pristine sandy beaches, and a harmonious blend of sea, sky, mountains, forests, waterfalls, and mystical caves. This is Vân Đồn, carrying the “Smile of the Sea.”

Driven by a desire to share this captivating beauty, designer and artist Ngô Như Hồng has chosen one of Vân Đồn’s finest treasures – the uniquely shaped oyster shells – to transform them with the vibrant colors of artistic painting, turning them into one-of-a-kind gifts. While oysters are celebrated as a “hometown specialty” – an OCOP 5-star product and a source of pride for Vân Đồn District, Quảng Ninh Province – their shells are now poised to become memorable keepsakes for both domestic and international visitors. These gifts embody the “Smile of the Sea,” preserving and spreading the renowned beauty of Vân Đồn across the globe.

Designer and artist Ngô Như Hồng has crafted a special gift collection with the hope of adding “another piece” to the complete picture, joining hands to promote the beauty and essence of this island district with pride as Vietnam’s first international trading port – a truly unique tourism destination. The Artistic Oyster Shell Collection – “Smile of the Sea” is a journey of reviving and infusing soul into the rugged, distinctive shells, meticulously cleaned and handcrafted. On each shell’s surface, iconic landmarks of Vân Đồn, such as Cái Bầu Pagoda, Ao Tiên Port, Bái Tử Long Bay, Cổng Trời scenic spot, and ancient cultural relics, come to life vividly, blending traditional painting with modern inspiration.

Beyond that, these creations are transformed into:

  • Table decor accessories,
  • Christmas tree ornaments,
  • Premium souvenir gifts,
… allowing visitors to easily bring home a “piece of Vân Đồn” as a gift for friends, partners, or a cherished memory of the historic trading port.
